Jeremiah 16:1-13

All right, well good morning. Good morning. Welcome to coffee and devotions this morning We're going to be in Jeremiah chapter 16 learning a little bit more about Jeremiah the person that is So well, we have some coffee. Daniel's got tea. We'll pray and we'll get into God's Word It's still too hot for you? Yeah. Okay. Well, you ready to pray? Is your coffee hot? Not nearly as hot as your tea That's caffeinated coffee. So not for you Alright, do you want to pray or do you want me to? I can? Okay.
God, thank you so much for this day. Thank you for the blessing it is to spend time together. Thank you for your word. And we pray that you would please help us as we read it to understand it. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Alright, let me put your tea up here. There we go. We're at Jeremiah chapter 16 and we'll do the first 13 verses. So Jeremiah 16, the first 13 verses. Would you like to read the first verse? Sure. The Lord also came to me and said, You can do that if you want. Take a wife nor shall you have sons or daughters in this... In this place, good job. Well that says the Lord.
Concerning the sons of God, the sons and daughters, all who are born in this place of Israel, and concerning their mothers, who bore them and their fathers, who begot them in this land, they shall die a gruesome death. They shall not be lamented, nor shall they be buried, but they shall be like refuse on the face of the earth. They shall be consumed by the sword and by famine, and their corpses shall be meat for the birds of heaven and for the beasts of the earth." What's that section talking about? They're going to die and be eaten by the birds and the animals, aren't they?
For thus says the Lord, Do not enter the house of mourning, nor go to lament or bemoan them. For I have taken away my peace from this people, says the Lord. Loving kindness and mercies, both the great and the small, shall die in this land. They shall not be buried. Neither shall men lament for them, cut themselves, nor make themselves bald for them. Nor shall men break bread in mourning for them, to comfort them for the dead. Nor shall men give them the cup of consolation to drink for their father or their mother. Also you shall not go into the house of feasting, to sit with them, to eat and drink." What's he saying there? You shall not sit with them or anything. Yeah, right, this is talking about mourning, right? Even though they die, are they going to be sad and mourn for them? No. Nope. You want to read verse 9?
That says, The Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel, behold, I will That's a hard one cause you know cause Put your finger under it it's not that worse this one up here cause to Asked and cease cease from the place before your eyes and in your heart is the voice of and the voice of this the voice of the right room and the voice of the life and All right, so in that place before his eyes, is there going to be the voice of murder and gladness? So the bridegroom of celebrating weddings and stuff? No. He's going to stop all that type of normal joy. And it shall be when you show this people all these words, and they say to you, Why has the Lord pronounced all this great disaster against us? Or what is our iniquity? Or what is our sin that we have committed against the Lord our God?
Then you shall say to them, Because your fathers have forsaken me, says the Lord. They have walked after other gods, and have served them, and worshipped them, and have forsaken me, and not kept my laws. and you have done worse than your fathers. For behold, each one follows the dictates of his own evil heart, so that no one listens to me. Therefore, I will cast you out of this land into a land that you do not know, neither you nor your fathers. And there you shall serve other gods day and night, or I will not show you favor."
But what are they asking? Oh, he says he's not going to show them faith. But look, and it shall be when you show this people all these words and they say to you, why has the Lord pronounced all these great disasters against us? Or what is our iniquity? That's like their sin. God, why are you going to make us die in the open field? Why are you not going to let us marry and have gladness? What is our sin that we have committed against the Lord our God? And what's Jeremiah to say to them? Because your fathers have forsaken me. They walked after other gods. They followed the dictates of their own evil heart. And you did it too, and did it even worse.
Right, so, okay, so you're gonna walk out of the room and maybe mom will ask you, hey, Dandan, I don't have a lot of time to maybe in one sentence, what did you learn about this section in Jeremiah? What was that about? Well, that's a one word answer, one sentence answer. How would you summarize? Okay, so God's not going to show favor to the people anymore? Yeah. I might say something like, God tells the people that he's serious about the punishments coming for their sin. That's kind of a long mouthy type sentence, isn't it? Well, what do you think is the best verse that summarizes this? Do you remember any verses that stick out to you? Maybe verse six? Verse six.
Both great and small shall die in this land. They shall not be buried. Neither shall men lament for them, cut themselves, nor make themselves bald for them. I don't think that's not a bad verse for this, right? It's saying that they're going to die, and is anybody going to grieve for them? No, that's actually not a bad one, right?
You could say, if you're going to do six, you might say six and seven. something like that. In my Bible I have verse 4 underlined. They shall die gruesome deaths, they shall not be lamented, nor shall they be buried, but they shall be like refuse on the face of the earth, they shall be consumed by the sword and by famine, and their corpses shall be meat for the birds of heaven and for the beasts of the earth. That's what I have underlined, but that doesn't really get at the whole sin aspect, does it?
No, just like the punishment. So maybe something like verse 11 Not to sin. Try not to sin. Nope. I'll try not to sin. But what about when you get angry at your little sister? What are you going to do then? Is God going to leave you as a corpse in the field like refuse? Yeah. Yeah, right. Is that what the Romans wanted to do to him? Yeah. Yeah.
Even for the bird to pick off his flesh, right? But instead, Joseph of Arimathea went and asked for his body. and gave him a burial of a rich man, even though he was poor. And so yeah, Jesus took those sins for us. Oh, okay, so Jesus took those sins for us.
That's wonderful. So you can keep on sinning and not care about getting mad at your sister. Nope. I thought you just said Jesus took your sins. Yeah, but you still gotta try. Why? Jesus took your sins. Because us, you think Jesus wants us to get smashed on the cross again and again and again. Oh, so our willfully sinning would be like crucifying Jesus again and again and again? Yeah. Does it show that we actually understand the work of the Holy Spirit? Yeah. We were created in Christ Jesus for good. Right?
We repent. We turn away from those sins. Doesn't mean we won't struggle with sin still at all. But we're going to try to avoid what he said here, right? Their fathers forsook. Right? They forsook the Lord and they went after their own iniquity. We don't want to forsake the Lord. We want to follow the Lord. We want to love Him and love one another, right? Not so that he loves us, but because he loves us.
You think you're done here? I think I lost your attention. Yeah, a little bit. You're not really engaging with me. Well, think about this, man. Is this like a pretty picture? What's the picture like? Describe it to me. What do you mean by that? It's scary for them. What about it is scary? That people will shoot them. They won't, they'll die and you won't lament for them or anything.
Yeah, could you imagine, could you imagine going out to a field and seeing hundreds or thousands of bodies of dead people spread on the floor and the eagles and the vultures coming down and the raccoons coming and eating bodies apart in the road like roadkill? I saw the cat in the fields, dad. I saw the cat in the field, dad. Yeah, you've seen lots of roadkill and animals dead in the field, right? But have you ever seen a person? No. Would that be scary? Yeah. Yeah, that's how a serious God takes sin, doesn't he? Yeah. Yeah. You ready to pray?
Lord, we thank you so much for this day. And Father, we do pray that you would please help us. Lord, please do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Lord, we know that no temptation has overcome us, but what is common to man. And so, Father, we know that we can bear up under it because of your Holy Spirit. But Father, we pray that you would please teach us the way of escape, that we might endure it. Lord, please help us to follow after you, to love you, and to not follow the dictates of our own hearts. May you receive the glory, Lord. May your will be done, to your own earth as it is in heaven. We pray this in Jesus' name. Amen. May God bless you.
